When it comes to branding, looks matter. We’re sorry, but it’s true. But don’t shy away from that mirror just yet, because luckily for you, we’ve put together a quick list of design trends for 2015 that will ensure your brand is looking at its absolute best. Aren’t we nice.
1) Responsive Web Design
This is the biggie. Gone are the days when a mobile-friendly website was enough. Now it has to be mobile-lovely. As of January 2014, 58% of adult Americans owned a smart-phone. 63% of those were using their phones to surf the web and 44% of them have even slept next to their phone, lest they miss a call, text or an invite to an old school friend’s 30th. To cut a long story short, it seems like the phone has replaced the soul-mate these days (to be fair, they are less argumentative and far more reliable when it comes to directions). And remember, those figures don’t account for tablets, netbooks, smart-watches etc. Your website needs to look great, navigate easily and run smoothly on these devices. If it doesn’t, your brand will be left behind.
2) Art Direction
Let’s be clear, we think your brand should look great on any and all platforms, but it needs to be consistent too. It’s all well and good having a mobile-lovely (we’re trademarking that) site, but if it looks nothing like its cousin, the desktop website, or its slightly inappropriate uncle, social media, then there’s a problem. The same goes for your physical marketing materials too. We could write a whole blog post about your business cards, leaflets, posters, novelty pens – and if you’re lucky, we might. In the mean time, you’ll have to trust us when we tell you that consistency is just as important in the physical realm as it is the digital one. Have an overarching theme throughout all formats that identifies closely with your brand.
3) Massive Images
Visual communication is perhaps the most powerful and simple way to convey your brand identity, so it’s important you’ve got some great images in your artillery. If you haven’t noticed, this year is all about the big, beautiful image. You’ll probably remember the days of dial-up internet, when tiny images would slowly unveil themselves one chunk at a time, staggering to an underwhelming finish line. Thankfully, we’ve moved on to bigger and better things, but images remain an essential part of any branding scheme. Wield their power, don’t hide away from it.
And let’s not forget: Big Background Videos
Size really does matter, it seems. As internet speeds get faster and faster, 2015 promises to be the year of the big, beautiful background video. If you have great content, shove it in the faces of your site’s visitors. Not literally, that would probably get you arrested. Instead, do it through the effective, elegant medium of video.
Design trends in 2015 have, somewhat predictably, been shaped by faster internet speeds, increasing use of mobile devices and an ever-growing need to get your content across in the most visually impressive, efficient way possible. Big letters, big pictures and big videos that retain their beauty across all platforms will go a long way in making sure your brand stands out on the red carpet this year.
